Product Overview

Self-tapping screws are fasteners that can form their own mating threads as they are driven into a pre-drilled or pilot hole, eliminating the need for a tapped hole or nut. DonMo Hardware manufactures a comprehensive range of self-tapping screws including wood screws for timber applications, sheet metal screws for thin metal and plastic, and self-drilling screws (TEK screws) that drill their own hole and tap threads in a single operation.

Our self-tapping screws are available in stainless steel SS304 (A2) for general-purpose corrosion resistance, SS316 (A4) for marine and coastal applications, and zinc-plated carbon steel for cost-effective indoor use. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to pre-drill a hole for self-tapping screws?

A: It depends on the screw type and material. For wood screws, a pilot hole is recommended (especially in hardwood) to prevent splitting and ensure proper driving. For sheet metal screws, a pilot hole is usually needed in metal thicker than 1mm. For self-drilling TEK screws, no pre-drilling is needed — the drill point creates the hole and taps the thread in one operation. However, for very thick or hard metal, a pilot hole may still be helpful.

Q: What TEK drill point size should I use?

A: TEK drill point sizes correspond to the maximum metal thickness they can drill: #2 point for 1–2.5mm metal, #3 point for 2.5–4mm, #4 point for 4–5mm, #5 point for 5–6mm. Choose a point size that matches or slightly exceeds the total thickness of the materials you are fastening together. Using a point that is too short may not fully penetrate, while one that is too long may waste time and reduce thread engagement.

Q: Can stainless steel self-drilling screws drill through stainless steel?

A: Standard stainless steel TEK screws have a carbon steel drill point (hardened) that can drill through mild steel, but drilling through stainless steel with a stainless TEK screw is difficult and may cause the drill point to dull or gall. For fastening stainless steel to stainless steel, we recommend using carbon steel TEK screws with a corrosion-resistant coating (like Ruspert or Geomet), or pre-drilling the stainless steel and using standard stainless sheet metal screws. For marine applications, SS316 screws with pre-drilled holes are recommended.

Q: Do you provide sealing washers for roofing screws?

A: Yes. We can supply self-drilling roofing screws with integrated EPDM or neoprene sealing washers bonded to the hex washer head. These provide a waterproof seal for roofing and cladding applications. Sealing washer colors can be matched to roof sheet colors (common: black, white, gray, brown, red, green).
